Remembered for its early start and celebrated for the ideal weather conditions that persisted throughout, 2016 marks another exceptional vintage for the Napa Valley.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate would agree; in the magazine’s annual and highly anticipated Napa Valley Report, Perrotti-Brown celebrates the consistency of Napa Valley’s 2016 Vintage wines. Perrotti-Brown cites the best characteristic of the ’16’s as “a kind of effortlessness about the wines,” especially the 2016 red wines, which “…possess beautifully soft, ripe tannins and taut, muscular (but not skinny) fruit with compelling tension.”

2016 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina Vineyard – 96 points
“The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Leopoldina Vineyard offers a stunning nose of roses, violets and kirsch over a core of cassis, dark chocolate, cigar box and forest floor with a waft of wild thyme. Medium to full-bodied and laden with tightly would black fruit and floral layers, it has a solid line of ripe, grainy tannins and a very long, vivacious finish.”

2016 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard – 95 points
“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard is a little youthfully mute, slowly unfurling to reveal fresh black cherries, blackcurrants and wild blueberries with wafts of underbrush, new leather, cinnamon stick and cloves plus a touch of mossy bark. Medium to full-bodied, wonderfully elegant and sophisticated in the mouth, it has a solid backbone of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with great poise.”

2016 Turnbull Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus Vineyard – 94 points
“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with profound baked blackberries, plum preserves and crème de cassis notes giving way to nuances of Chinese five spice, smoked meats, sautéed herbs and tilled black soil. Full-bodied, rich and powerfully fruited in the mouth, it has a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to lift the hedonistic fruit to a long finish.”

“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Reserve features vibrant blackcurrants, black cherries and redcurrants scents with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead, lavender and bay leaves. “Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label opens with a beautiful perfume of red roses, black tea, menthol and fragrant earth scents over a core of cassis, warm plums and kirsch plus wafts of cedar and truffles. The palate is medium to full-bodied with exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness lifting the bright, vivacious fruit layers to a long, perfumed finish.”

“Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Pierra is a little broody to begin, unfurling to reveal gorgeous Black Forest cake, warm cassis, dried mulberries and preserved plums scents with touches of Indian spices, lavender, black olives, unsmoked cigars and fertile loam plus a waft of cardamom. The full-bodied palate packs in the black fruit and exotic spice layers, framed by very firm, very ripe tannins and finishing on a compelling earthy note.”
